What chronotype actually means
Chronotype is your innate timing preference — when your body wants to sleep, eat, and be alert. It’s set by a combination of genetic variants in your circadian clock genes (PER3 length polymorphism is the most studied) and slowly modulated by age, light exposure history, and schedule.
About a quarter of adults are clear morning types. About half land in the intermediate range. The remaining 15–20% are evening types, and they’re the group for whom standard 9-to-5 schedules cause the most friction. Forcing an evening type into a 6 AM wake schedule is well-documented in the literature as social jet lag — a persistent misalignment between biological time and clock time that shows up in worse mood, worse metabolic markers, and worse performance.
What to do with your result
If you’re a morning type and your life lets you wake before 7 AM, you’re aligned — keep doing what you’re doing. Front-load demanding work to mornings.
If you’re an evening type and your schedule forces you up early, you have two real options: shift your rhythm earlier (consistent wake time, morning bright light, dim evenings, possibly low-dose melatonin), or rearrange your schedule to match your biology where possible. Most people overestimate how much they can fight chronotype and underestimate how much schedule flexibility they actually have.
If you’re intermediate, pay attention to which way you trend — small lifestyle shifts move you a couple of points and that’s often enough to feel different.

How accurate is this chronotype quiz?
It uses the rMEQ — the reduced Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire by Adan & Almirall (1991). It correlates with the full 19-item Horne-Östberg MEQ at r=0.87 and with actigraphy-measured sleep timing at r=0.5–0.6. Strong enough to place you in the right bracket; not so precise that a 1-point shift means something.
Can my chronotype change?
Slowly, yes. Chronotype is mostly genetic (PER3, CRY1, CLOCK variants) and follows a life-course pattern: adolescents and young adults drift later, peaking in evening tendency around age 19–21; adults gradually shift earlier with each decade. Lifestyle interventions (light timing, consistent schedule) can move you 1–2 points but rarely flip you from owl to lark.
What percentage of people are morning vs evening types?
Roughly 25–30% morning types, 50–60% intermediate, 15–20% evening types in adult populations. Surveys vary by country and age — Scandinavian populations skew slightly later, possibly due to seasonal light variation.
Should I try to become a morning person?
If your schedule forces it, you can shift your rhythm with consistent wake times and morning bright light. But fighting your chronotype is expensive — evening types forced to early schedules show worse cognitive performance, mood, and metabolic markers (Wittmann et al, 2006). If you have flexibility, align your schedule to your chronotype, not the other way around.
Why do some quizzes give different results?
Some use the full 19-item MEQ, some use the 5-item rMEQ, some use the MCTQ (Munich Chronotype Questionnaire) which asks about actual sleep times on free days. They measure overlapping but slightly different constructs. rMEQ is the most validated short form.
Does the quiz work for shift workers?
Yes, but answer based on how you feel on your days off — not your current shift schedule. The quiz captures innate preference; shift work distorts the signal if you answer based on current schedule.
